How important are your small actions to your baby’s successful future?

Small but mighty acts can transform baby’s life. Tiny steps may seem unimportant but together, they can invent a better future for you and your baby.

A series of small actions adds up. Which of these small acts of love do you want to add to your pregnancy journey?

• Skip foods that may cause health concerns later. Raw or rare meats, soft cheeses (feta, brie), liver, sushi, raw eggs and unpasteurized milk can cause food poisoning.
• Aim for seven to nine hours of sleep. Choose whatever sleeping position is most comfortable for you through most of your pregnancy. Your health care provider may have specific sleep position recommendations after 30 weeks of pregnancy.
• Keep the water flowing. Your pregnant body needs more water than normal. Carry a water bottle and aim for eight or more cups each day. Drink up to avoid these common signs of dehydration: constipation, dry skin, dry mouth, headache, infrequent urination and sleepiness.
• Prioritize prenatal visits. Life comes at you fast and it may be tempting to skip health provider visits. Women who do not get regular prenatal care are more likely to have a child with low birth weight. While you are there, ask your health provider about a flu shot and a Dtap vaccination. Being pregnant is challenging enough without adding flu symptoms.
• Reduce stress. Stress can knock you down, even when you are not pregnant. It is best to avoid stressful situations and people who trigger anxiety if you can. Do not tiptoe around or ignore stress. When stressed, take a walk, call a friend or take time to meditate. If stress continues, talk to your health care provider for options.

Never underestimate the ripple effect of small steps. Together, they are extraordinary acts of love that protect your baby’s future.

• Take a long drink of water. Aim to drink three large water bottles each day. Keep water bottles in your car and throughout your home.
• Record why you feel stressed. Next time fear, anxiety, sadness or frustration creep into your life, stop. Write down what is causing those feelings, then decide how to change the situation. Options: Walk. Meditate. Breathe deeply. Ask family and friends for encouragement. Talk to your health care provider about seeking help.
• Sleep like a pro. New sleeping habits may help you get more restful shuteye. Turn off electronics for at least an hour before bedtime - even cellphones. Position pillows to support your back and knees and elevate your head. Stay well hydrated to prevent leg cramps.
